From Dropout to Professor: Dr. Mohammad Azam Ali – National Award Winning Educator & Visionary Social Activist
Dr. Mohammad Azam Ali is an accomplished Assistant Professor of English, motivational speaker, and social activist from Telangana whose life journey reflects extraordinary resilience and dedication to society. Born into a poor family in Chirlavancha village, he overcame severe financial hardships, child labour, and personal struggles through education and determination. He later earned a Ph.D. in English from Kakatiya University and has trained thousands of students in communication skills and personality development. A recipient of the President of India NSS National Award and the National Youth Award from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, he is also the Founder President of Chamak Foundation, an NGO committed to empowering underprivileged children through education. Through teaching, social service, and motivational work, Dr. Azam Ali continues to inspire young people across India to rise above challenges and serve society.
Early Life and Struggle
Dr. Mohammad Azam Ali was born on 5 August 1991 in Chirlavancha village of Siricilla Mandal in the erstwhile Karimnagar district of Telangana. He was the fifth child of Ahmed Hussain, a lorry driver, and Khalida Begum, a daily wage labourer. His parents struggled every day to provide food, shelter, and education to their children. The family belonged to the poor working class where survival itself was uncertain.
When opportunities in their village became scarce, the family migrated to Karimnagar town in search of livelihood. Yet life remained difficult. Azam studied only in government schools because his family could not afford private education. Many days passed without proper meals. Paying house rent was a challenge. Books, uniforms, and stationery were luxuries. Despite these hardships, his mother believed that education was the only way her children could escape poverty.
During his schooling years, tragedy struck when his father abandoned the family. With no steady income, Khalida Begum carried the responsibility of raising her children alone. She worked as a labourer under harsh conditions, yet she never allowed her children to lose hope. Her sacrifices left a deep impact on young Azam’s mind.
When he reached eighth class, the financial crisis forced him to discontinue school for one year. He began working as a wall poster boy, sticking posters on walls and tying banners in streets to earn a few rupees. It was a painful experience for a young boy who wanted to study but had no choice. One day, while pasting posters, he saw a slogan on a wall: “Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan – Education for All, Sab Padhe – Sab Bade.” Those words touched his heart deeply. He realised that education alone could transform his life.
With courage, he approached his teachers and explained his family’s condition. His teachers came forward to support him financially and emotionally. With their help, he rejoined school. That moment became the turning point of his life. It also planted in him a lifelong respect for teachers and a desire to become an educator himself.
Academic Journey Against All Odds
Once back in school, Azam studied with extraordinary dedication. He secured second rank in his school in SSC examinations in March 2006 from Government High School, Padmanagar village. This success gave him confidence that he could achieve more despite poverty.
He joined Government Junior College Arts and Commerce, Karimnagar from 2006 to 2008 with History, Economics, and Civics as optional subjects. He scored 873 out of 1000 marks and stood second at the state level, receiving the State‑level Pratibha Puraskar Award in 2008 from the Government of Andhra Pradesh.
He qualified in the APRDC entrance examination and received admission into Andhra Pradesh Residential Degree College at Nagarjunasagar. Unfortunately, financial constraints prevented him from attending counselling and travelling, so he joined SRR Government Degree College in Karimnagar and completed his B.A (H.E.P) from 2008 to 2011.
His thirst for knowledge did not stop there. He pursued M.A in English Literature at Kakatiya University, Warangal from 2012 to 2014. Coming from Telugu‑medium education, studying English literature was extremely challenging. At times he felt like quitting. But encouragement from teachers, especially Syed Moin Ahmed, helped him continue. He studied English newspapers daily, practiced speaking for hours, and improved gradually.
He later completed M.Ed from University College of Education, Kakatiya University, qualified State Eligibility Test in English and Education, secured first rank in PhD entrance examination, and completed his PhD in English from Kakatiya University between 2018 and 2022. His academic success became an inspiration to rural students who thought higher education was impossible for them.
Learning English: A Life‑Changing Decision
A defining moment came during a National Integration Camp at JNTU Kakinada in 2010. Azam was asked to speak on “National Integration and Role of Youth.” When he spoke in Telugu, organisers stopped him and asked him to speak in English or Hindi. He left the stage feeling humiliated. That day he decided to master English.
With guidance from lecturers Nalimela Bhaskar and Gande Parsha Ram Rao, he joined spoken English programmes. He read newspapers, magazines, and books daily. He attended classes conducted with support of The Hindu E‑Plus Club. Slowly his confidence grew. His struggle with English later became his strength. Today he trains thousands of engineering students in communication skills, interview preparation, and personality development. Many of his students now work in top companies and government services.
Awakening of Social Service Spirit
Dr. Azam Ali’s interest in social service began in school through Lead India 2020, NCC, and environmental programmes. During the 2004 tsunami tragedy, he and his friends collected donations for victims and handed them to the district collector. The appreciation letter he received motivated him to continue social work.
During Intermediate college, he joined National Service Scheme under Dr. S. Manohara Chary. From that moment NSS became a mission in his life. As a volunteer in junior college, degree college, and university level, he worked in tree plantation drives, cleanliness campaigns, AIDS awareness, pulse polio programmes, environmental protection, literacy programmes, village adoption, blood donation drives, and disaster relief.
During 2009 floods in Andhra Pradesh, he collected ₹10,000 and 1,000 notebooks for flood victims. His dedication impressed NSS coordinators who nominated him for the Indira Gandhi NSS National Best Volunteer Award. He received this prestigious award for 2012‑13 from President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan in 2013. Later, he received the National Youth Award 2017‑18 from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. These honours strengthened his commitment to serve society.
Participation in Telangana Statehood Movement
During his graduation years, Azam actively participated in the Telangana statehood movement. He joined rallies, dharnas, sadak bandh protests, Million March, and Sakala Janula Samme. When the Sri Krishna Committee visited, he represented student and education issues. His activism reflected his belief that education and regional development are essential for social justice.
Anti‑Corruption Activities and Civic Awareness

These experiences shaped his commitment to ethical governance and responsible citizenship.
Teaching Career and Academic Contributions
After completing post‑graduation, Azam worked as Guest Faculty in Government Degree College for Women, Karimnagar. Later he became Assistant Professor of English in engineering colleges in Warangal. Over more than ten years of teaching, he trained over 20,000 students in English communication skills, interview techniques, and personality development.
He has presented papers in national and international conferences, published research in UGC Care journals, and authored the book Indian Youth Literature: Mapping Young Minds in Changing India. He currently serves as Head of Department of English and Chairperson of Board of Studies for B.Tech first‑year English subject. His students regard him not only as a teacher but as a mentor and life guide.
From NSS Volunteer to Programme Officer
Dr. Azam Ali later became NSS Programme Officer and guided hundreds of students in social service. Under his leadership, NSS units conducted Swachh Bharat campaigns, drug awareness drives, ethics workshops, environmental programmes, voting awareness rallies, youth leadership camps, and community outreach activities. He sent students to national camps in Delhi, Maharashtra, and Kerala, giving them exposure to national integration and leadership training.
Founding of Chamak Foundation – Chamak Padhai Se
Believing that education is the strongest tool to eradicate poverty, Dr. Azam Ali founded Chamak Foundation (Chamak Padhai Se) on 6 October 2023 in Hyderabad in the presence of Professor Shanta Sinha. The mission of Chamak Foundation is to empower underprivileged children through education, life‑skills training, counselling, and mentorship.
Through the foundation, he organised English communication classes, personality development sessions, and guidance programmes in government schools and Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas. The foundation provided financial assistance to students in M.Pharmacy, M.Phil, M.A, BLISC, and B.Ed courses. It established libraries in ZPHS Matwada and Rangapoor village with thousands of books and donated books to rural schools. These efforts help students access knowledge and confidence.
