Apart from this, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar had the most prominent role in the making of the constitution of our country, so Constitution Day is also celebrated as a symbol of paying tribute to him.

Why did we need a constitution?

When the British rule was about to end from the India, then the country needed such a legal book, which would maintain unity, equality among the people of all religions living in the country. This book was needed so that the country can be united and all the people get all the rights without any discrimination. Because of this, the demand for making a constitution started among the freedom fighters. When the country was about to become independent, the demand for the formation of a Constituent Assembly started rising.

The first meeting of this assembly was held in the year 1946 on 9th December. 207 members were present in this meeting held in the Central Hall of Parliament House. When the Constituent Assembly was formed, there were 389 members in this assembly at that time but later the number was reduced to 299. This happened because when the country was partitioned after independence, some princely states were no longer a part of the assembly and due to which, and the number of members decreased.
