Air pollution: Supreme Court order the Delhi government to close schools.


The Supreme Court on Thursday (December 2, 2021) pulled up the Delhi government for opening schools amid rising air pollution levels in the city. The Delhi government’s move to reopen schools was questioned by the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court questioned why children were compelled to go to school when the government has implemented work from home for adults. The court was particularly concerned that the Delhi government was not taking any action on the ground to reduce the level of ‘severe’ pollution.

Meanwhile, according to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), the air quality in the country’s capital today remained in the ‘very poor category. The overall air quality index (AQI) of Delhi stood at 312 on Thursday morning. An AQI of zero to 50 is considered ‘good’, 51 to 100 as ‘satisfactory’, 101 to 200 as ‘moderate’, 201 to 300 as ‘poor’, 301 to 400 Considered ‘very bad’. And 401 to 500 is considered ‘serious’

Due to poor air quality, air quality and weather forecasting and research have issued advisories to avoid outdoor physical activity and extended exertion.
